Barmouth sits right where the Mawddach Estuary opens into the sea, with a genuinely enormous beach that rarely feels crowded no matter how busy the town gets — there's simply too much sand for that. Proper seaside-town extras line the promenade: arcades, donkey rides, ice cream stalls, and a working harbour where boat trips head out along the coast or up the estuary. No lifeguards patrol here, so keep an eye on the tide when swimming, and stick to the marked bathing areas away from the boat channel. Dogs can run free along most of the beach all year, though a stretch near the leisure centre is off-limits to them between April and September. What really sets Barmouth apart is the bridge — a half-mile timber viaduct carrying both the railway and a footpath across the estuary, with views up towards Cadair Idris that are hard to beat. Cross it on foot and you're at the start of the Mawddach Trail, a level path all the way to Dolgellau. Plenty of parking, cafés and shops right by the sand, and the whole seafront is step-free.
