The Narrow Gauge Railway Museum sits right at Tywyn Wharf station, the terminus of the Talyllyn Railway, and is a genuinely impressive free collection — more than a thousand items from over 80 narrow-gauge railways across Wales, England, the Isle of Man, Ireland and Scotland, from complete locomotives down to old tickets and signalling equipment. Railway fans and Thomas the Tank Engine enthusiasts alike will enjoy the dedicated section on the Reverend W. Awdry, who volunteered on the Talyllyn Railway early on and drew directly on it for his fictional Skarloey Railway — the museum even has a reconstruction of part of his study. A lovely, unhurried stop either before or after a ride on the steam train, and free to visit.
