The Fairbourne Railway is a charming narrow-gauge miniature steam line with a genuinely unusual history — it began life in 1895 as a horse-drawn tramway hauling building materials for the new seaside village of Fairbourne, before becoming a passenger railway and eventually the 12¼-inch gauge heritage line it is today. The two-mile route runs alongside the beach and dunes from Fairbourne station to Barmouth Ferry at the tip of the peninsula, where a passenger ferry crosses the Mawddach Estuary to Barmouth in around ten minutes — making it easy to combine a train ride, a ferry crossing and a wander round Barmouth into one day out. The railway runs seasonally on specific days, so it's worth checking the timetable before you set off.
