The Lloyd George Museum tells the life story of David Lloyd George, Britain's only Welsh-speaking Prime Minister, in his home village of Llanystumdwy on the Llŷn Peninsula. Recently given a £280,000 refurbishment with new interactive displays, the museum traces his journey from a modest upbringing — raised by his shoemaker uncle at neighbouring Highgate Cottage — to the highest office in the land, steering Britain through the First World War, laying foundations for the welfare state, and helping shape the Treaty of Versailles. A short walk through a Victorian cottage garden links the museum to Highgate itself, restored to how it looked when he lived there, and to his riverside grave nearby, designed by his friend Clough Williams-Ellis of Portmeirion fame. Allow around 90 minutes to see the museum, the cottage and the short film on his life. Open through the summer months and by appointment otherwise — a genuinely fascinating stop for anyone interested in British political history.
