MOMA Machynlleth (Museum of Modern Art, Wales) is a free contemporary art gallery in the heart of Machynlleth, housed alongside Y Tabernacl — a former Wesleyan chapel converted into a performing arts centre in the mid-1980s. Across seven exhibition spaces, it shows a constantly changing programme of modern and contemporary Welsh art, drawn from the 400-plus-piece Tabernacle Collection featuring artists such as Kyffin Williams, Gwilym Pritchard and Brenda Chamberlain alongside rotating shows spotlighting contemporary talent. Many works are for sale, and each August the gallery hosts the Tabernacle Art Competition. It's a lovely, unexpected find in a small Mid Wales market town, easily combined with a browse of Machynlleth's independent shops and cafés — and free to visit, though donations are welcome.
