Yr Ysgwrn is the farmhouse home of Hedd Wyn, one of Wales's best-loved poets, and one of the most moving heritage visits in the country. Ellis Humphrey Evans — his bardic name Hedd Wyn — was killed at Passchendaele in 1917, just weeks before he was posthumously awarded the Bard's Chair at that year's National Eisteddfod. When judges announced the winner and called his name, his family stood to explain he had died in action; the chair was draped in black cloth and has been known ever since as Y Gadair Ddu, the Black Chair. His family kept it, and the farmhouse, largely as it was for decades, quietly welcoming anyone who asked to see it. Now cared for by Snowdonia National Park, Yr Ysgwrn offers a guided tour of the farmhouse and outbuildings, telling Hedd Wyn's story — and that of the many young men from Trawsfynydd who never returned from the First World War — with real depth and feeling. Booking ahead is recommended, and allow a good couple of hours. A quiet, beautiful, and genuinely unforgettable stop in the hills above Trawsfynydd.
